Project: Sing For Freedom Choir
Musical Director: Gemma Storr
The Sing for Freedom refugee choir was originally founded by the charity Freedom from Torture in 2016, and is made up of current and former clients of the charity, as well as staff and local residents.
The choir lost their funding from Freedom from Torture in 2018 and, after a successful crowdfunding campaign, it is now a project of Together Productions, a not for profit community interest company.
Through rehearsals and performances, the choir has created a community for refugees and asylum seekers who have made their homes in the UK after facing extreme difficulties in their countries of origin. The therapeutic impact of being part of the choir has changed lives. As one of the members says "One of the worst things about torture is that it silences you….the choir has given me back a voice".
Come and join us – Sing for Freedom is always open to new members - you don't need any experience and everyone is welcome. We rehearse on Thursdays from 12pm – 1:30pm at Freedom from Torture: 111 Isledon Rd, London N7 7JW
We are running taster sessions to welcome new members on Thursday 30th January and Thursday 6th February 2020 - come and join in the fun. Contact email@example.com if you would like to come along.
What we've been upto
Thank you to everyone who donated to help save the Sing for Freedom Choir, we still need your help!
Thanks to your support, we have so far raised over £15,000 to keep the choir going. The choir is back in full swing and we have already had a jam-packed term of rehearsals, performances and music making. We celebrated Refugee Week at the Southbank Centre, we performed as part of Singing Our Lives, we welcomed new members and we have a new fundraising campaign underway here!!
