A woman is smiling in front of a crowd of people

Ellen Muriel

Musical Director, Sing for Freedom Choir

I’m a freelance community choir leader and theatre facilitator with a Drama BA from Exeter University and an MA in Applied Anthropology and Community Arts from Goldsmiths, London.

I first became deeply involved with refugee rights, social justice and community arts in 2015 when I spent 6 months volunteering along the refugee route in Europe in pop-up camps. This led to the creation of my first solo theatre solo, ‘You Me and the Distance Between Us’ using poetry, puppetry, multi-rolling and song to raise awareness, provoke action and explore my own relationship to the complex political situation. Through touring internationally the show led me to Dresden, Germany, where I lived and worked for 4 years from 2017-2020. There I set up my first open access Natural Voice community choir as well as directing and producing theatre projects for newly arrived refugees and migrants around the themes of identity, belonging and intercultural family relationships.

Since returning to the UK during the pandemic I’ve set up three Natural Voice community choirs across London and East Sussex: ‘Sounds Like Home’ international women’s choir at Hoxton Hall, Avalon Choir in South Bermondsey, and the Tide Mills Choir in Newhaven. I took over Musical Direction of the Sing for Freedom Choir in January 2023. My simultaneous community theatre and opera experience includes direction, facilitation and assistance for Dream Arts, Kiln Theatre, Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network, Barefoot Opera and Loud Crowd.

Favourite Together Productions Moment: leading the Sing for Freedom Choir in our most recent concert at Christ Church Highbury before Christmas. The group had welcomed a lot of new members over the term and I felt so happy and proud to stand before such a colourful and joyful group of individuals from such different walks of life giving a loud, harmonious and passionate performance!
